What do you get when you put together a bunch of music loving friends and family? One hot Music and DJ crew.

Meet DJ Maq aka Kelvin McClendon, the leader of this group.

Kelvin, tell me about yourself.
I first started DJing parties and events in the early 80s while I was in college at Tennessee State University, where I graduated with a BA in Music education. I was fortunate enough to always have good equipment with multiple set ups but I could never be in two places at the same time. My brother helped me at first, but I started meeting other people that were like-minded. That allowed me to duplicate myself by working 2 or more events at the same time.

Tell me about your team.
DJ D- Mack aka Darryl McClendon (my brother), MC Meika E aka Meika McClendon (my wife), MC Big Fun aka James Wilson (my cousin), DJ Sam aka Samuel Jean- Phillippe (a frat brother), DJ Blends aka Henry Shelton (friend of 30 years), DJ Red Dog aka Corey Walker (a frat brother), DJ Todd aka as Todd Boston (good friend), and I have several sound engineers that assist with live sound and corporate events.

Are you married? Do you have kids?
Yes, I'm married to Meika  and we have a son, Kelvin, Jr who's 10 years old and they both love what I do.

What were your early influences?
DJ Marley Mall, DJ Jazzy Jeff and many others.

What do you enjoy most about DJing?
Being able to read the crowd and playing the song that makes them put their cell phones down.

What are your top 3 go-to songs?
Toby Keith - I Love This Bar, Too Short - Blow the Whistle, and Montell Jordan - This Is How We Do It

What do you usually start with when you prepare a set?
For weddings, I use songs from the playlist selected by the bride or wedding planner. For parties or other events, we read the crowd.

Of all the events you’ve DJ’d in the past couple years, do you have a favorite event that sticks out more than others?
Yes, we did a surprise party for a 50 year old man in his man cave. 100 or more people crammed into a room built for 50 people, and I have never had so much fun with a crowd.

Vinyl? CD? Computer?
Computer

What's your favorite Old School Song?
Zapp & Roger - More Bounce to the Ounce

What's your favorite New School Song?

Yes, but I can assist if they need me to.

Do you provide any other services, such as lighting, photo booth, etc?
We have dance floor lighting but we can assist you in your search for other lighting.

How extensive is your music library or song list? 80,00 songs and counting. We can cover anything....Country, R&B, Rap, Old School, Rock, Classic Rock....if we don't have it, we will get it.

Are we guaranteed to have the DJ of our choice at our event?
Yes

Do you act as the "emcee" and make all of the announcements?
We can act as the emcee, but over the years it seems to flow smoother if a person that knows everyone’s face is the emcee.

Do to motivate the crowd if nobody is dancing?
YES

Do you take requests from guests?
Yes but reluctantly. We will play from the play list set up with the bride or wedding planner, but let us control the atmosphere of the event. We know what to play to make your guests dance.

Can we submit a "Do Not Play" list?
Yes

Within 24 hours
